grief

Saturday, August 15th, 2009

my friend amanda says that it’s ok to grieve things as much as you grieve people.

i’m grieving my magnificent teacup collection. we had a leak in our roof, which caused the plaster in our wall to soften, and the cabinet holding all my cups to go crashing to the ground…

broken teacups

broken teacups

some of them were over 100 years old, some of them were rare, some of them were just cute and quirky ones that i found in shops and liked the look of…

they were all lovingly chosen, they were all precious, and they are almost all gone.

i’m sure i’ll get over it in time, but i am very sad right now…

variation on a theme

my last post was about focussing on things i enjoy and that make me happy. this one is more of the same!

dmc
i replenished my stock of embroidery floss last week, and seeing it all laid out, so bright and inviting gave me a little glow.

it’s making me want to sew so much, but i am writing lab reports at the moment, so it will have to wait!

in the mean time, i have more cute and pretty things to share:

pretty: i am plotting a recreation of this beautiful bedroom at my place. i think a few trips to antique stores and a couple of quilting days could get me there!
(image from country living, via lobster and swan)

cute: i love this beautiful print of a girl reading in the forest by groundwork. i can just put myself right in it - i love that!

cute: david morrissey is one of the cutest guys around, and this portrait of him, by andrew farrington, is further evidence of said cuteness, in my opinion! it’s part of a really amazing series of portraits, in which every subject is wearing that same hat. you can see the series at his website

pretty: i hardly ever iron clothes, but as a quilter i spend a lot of time at my ironing board. as a result i want it to be pretty. mine, sadly, is not. fortunately, “tiny happy” posted some really easy instructions for making your own ironing board cover, and i am going to have a go at following them soon.

cute: this amazing chalkboard calendar idea, from home shopping spy, makes me wish i had a wall free to do it on… ours would be covered in doodles and silly notes along with all the serious appointments and reminders that would go there too!

ok! i’m going back to the books!

accentuate the positive

where did my holidays go? it seems only a few moments ago that i was deeply immersed in exam preparation at the end of semester one, and now semester two has begin and it’s full steam ahead.
i’m finding, this evening, that i have to lay my copy of ‘brideshead revisited’ aside in favour of a bunch of journal articles that i need to read in preparation for writing my next paper. they have titles like: “regulatory focus and strategic inclinations: promotion and prevention in decision-making”, “prediction of negative attitudes toward australian asylum seekers: false beliefs, nationalism, and self-esteem,” and “the paradox of group-based guilt: modes of national identification, conflict vehemence, and reactions to the in-group’s moral violations”… the list goes on. i’ll admit that i’m quite a nerd, and learning about this stuff is kind of exciting for me, but it’s equally stressful and intense, and i can’t help the odd pang when i think of the holiday leisure time i have had to forgo for now.

to bring myself a little cheer, i just have to think about some of the cute and pretty things i have come across online in the last couple of days. want to see?

pretty: livy’s tutorial for making paper lace at her blog “a field journal”. i think i might try making some of these nex time we have a party at our house.

cute: bears made of recycled blankets” by fontok. good for the environment, good for you!

pretty: this amazing botanical calendar by susyjack. i am obsessed with all things botanical, so the motifs here are just so lovely to me.

cute: my funny family - a claymation by 5 year old girl and her family.

… and finally, here is something both pretty, and cute - passionfruit cake all wrapped in a tiny little parcel. i bought it from a bakery that i think was tiawanese , and i can’t bring myself to destroy the adorable wrapping and eat it, so i’ve resorted to taking a photo of it instead:

okay - time to hit the books!

these are a few of my favourite things…

Saturday, August 1st, 2009

last week i had high tea with a friend and her daughter at a little shop that was both tea-rooms and an antique shop. what a brilliant combination! you can sit there with your cup of tea and your cupcakes and finger sandwiches, and admire all the delicate china and sparkly jewelery. genius!

as i browsed around, i came across this little dish…

… and i had to have it. after all, it combines two of my favourite things: antique china, and cross stitch patterns!

don’t you love it when you find perfect little things like that?
